LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have reportedly “left behind millions of dollars” in the US when they moved to the UK in 2024 after the presidential election.
A source recently revealed to In Touch Weekly that the couple left virtually everything they owned behind in California to start a new life on English soil.
“Ellen was just done with America and Portia was also ready to turn the page. But make no mistake, they left behind millions of dollars in possessions and collections to make this move and because it was Ellen’s idea, you have to peel back the layers a little bit,” claimed a friend of the couple.
Further reflecting on their move, they shared that what the couple did is only conceivable to the wealthy owing to the manpower they have in the US.
“Ellen and Portia going to England was an extreme move and the kind of thing only incredibly rich people with full staffs of helpers can even contemplate pulling off,” explained the insider.
They continued, “In terms of their possessions, they left pretty much everything back in SoCal for their staff to sort through, get rid of, put into storage, and even sell. They are truly starting over in England and that says a lot because they put thousands of hours into their furniture and clothing collections and designing their homes in Los Angeles and then in Santa Barbara.”

The couple, who tied the knot in 2008, relocated to England after Donald Trump was elected the president in the November 2024 elections. However, according to the outlet, some of the couple’s friends believe that their move came at the heels of Ellen’s failed attempt to relaunch her career through the comedy special ‘For Your Approval’.
The ‘Finding Nemo’ vocal artist previously received immense criticism after she was accused of enabling a toxic work environment on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ set.
Nevertheless, another source previously told In Touch Weekly that since the couple’s life came to a crashing halt over the abuse allegations on sets of ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ and the subsequent relaunch failure, the flight to the UK would also give their marriage a fresh restart.
“The primary thing Ellen and Portia bond over is design and aesthetics, and now Ellen has created a fresh canvas for them to work on together as they build out their home life in the English countryside,” explained the source.
They added, “Basically it’s a chance to relive the greatest moments of their marriage – picking out linens and flooring and faucets, doing renovations, working with architects and decorators. This is the stuff that they live for, not being famous or pleasing audiences.”
“It’s telling that Ellen felt they needed to make this move as a couple and completely start over their life and status quo together,” the source continued, before concluding, “To people who know them, it looks like the most desperate and risky move she could possibly make, and she did it. For now, Portia is just along for the ride!”
